Get Outside
Abbeville County offers a mix of state parks, local recreation areas, and national forest land—each with its own character and outdoor opportunities. Whether you’re looking to hike, camp, ride, or simply relax in nature, these spaces offer room to explore at your own pace.
Activities and access often vary by season. Visitors should review current guidelines before visiting.
Calhoun Falls State Park
Calhoun Falls State Park is Abbeville County’s most full-service outdoor destination, set on pine-covered points along Lake Russell, one of South Carolina’s least-developed large reservoirs. Visitors can camp in tent or RV sites, enjoy day-use areas and picnic shelters, explore trails, and access the lake for boating, fishing, and swimming. The park is a great “basecamp” for families and first-time visitors because amenities are easy to find and the experience is equally suited for half-day trips or weekend stays.
Sumter National Forest
Spanning thousands of acres in the Long Cane Ranger District, Sumter National Forest offers wide-open public land for hiking, horseback riding, primitive camping, and scenic exploration. With fewer amenities and plenty of room to roam, it’s ideal for visitors looking to slow down, explore nature, and enjoy uncrowded forest settings.

McCalla Wildlife Management Area
Located near Iva on the shores of Lake Russell, McCalla Wildlife Management Area spans more than 5,600 acres of protected land. While hunting is a primary use during designated seasons, the area also includes a special-use section closed to hunting with approximately 10 miles of designated horseback riding trails, offering a quieter experience for equestrians and nature lovers.

Unique Adventures
Abbeville County’s unique adventures go beyond traditional parks and trails, offering memorable experiences you won’t find everywhere. From hands-on gem mining and scenic disc golf to horseback riding and relaxed outdoor recreation, these activities are perfect for visitors looking to try something different or add a fun twist to their day outside.
Boating & Fishing
With access to Lake Russell, Lake Secession, and nearby forest lakes, Abbeville County offers some of the region’s most peaceful boating and fishing opportunities. Whether you’re launching a boat, casting a line from shore, or spending the afternoon paddling calm coves, the area’s uncrowded waters make it easy to slow down and enjoy time on the lake.
Local Tip: Cell service can be spotty in forested areas. Download maps before you head out.
